How to choose the right luggage for your trip

Top-opening vs traditional clamshell suitcases

Traditional clamshell suitcases split 50/50 down the middle, giving you two shallow halves to pack. You need to lay the case flat and open both sides, which takes up double the case's footprint in floor or bed space. Top-opening suitcases also lay flat, but the lid lifts off the top, giving you a single deep cavity to pack into from above. You only need the footprint of the case itself, not twice the space. Packing and repacking is faster because everything sits in one compartment rather than being divided across two halves. Pack in layers with heavier items at the bottom and packing cubes stacked for easy access, each layer visible from above as you open the lid. The Glide Elite range uses this top-opening design across [carry-on], medium, and large sizes. The standard Glide range uses the traditional clamshell layout with front access pockets on the carry-on.

Hardshell or softshell

Hardshell luggage protects contents better against impact and water. The rigid polycarbonate shell absorbs baggage handling without cracking (unlike cheaper ABS plastic, which splits under stress). The trade-off is less flexibility and no external pockets. Softshell luggage is lighter, more flexible, and easier to squeeze into car boots or overhead bins. It absorbs less impact but offers more give when you need to fit one last item. Zoomlite hardshells use German Makrolon polycarbonate.
