Yes, the (two) external side pockets can fit drink bottles or anything else to help your commute - Glasses, notebooks etc.

Is this bag waterproof?

The outer material of this backpack is made from water-repellent polyester fabric. It is perfect for those occasions when you are caught in an unexpected rain shower. However, if you accidentally dropped your bag in a pool of water, or if the bag gets soaked in a heavy downpour then water could seep through the dust proof reverse zippers and the edges of the various compartments.
