"Mobile phones are now mobile germ devices ..." USA Today

Ever since phones got "smarter" and we started using them more and more, articles have been appearing about how dirty they are. "10 times dirtier than a toilet seat" is a common statistic that is quoted, and it is rightly one to be concerned about. 40% of Australians admit to taking their phone into the toilet with them. Even if you're one of the 60% who don't, there are still a lot of germs and bacteria breeding on your phone.

Harmful bacteria can come into contact with your hands from many sources, not just in the bathroom. It's why we are being told to wash or sanitise our hands so often during the COVID-19 pandemic. Anything you touch can transfer germs and bacteria onto your hands. Touching your phone before washing your hands will transfer some of those germs to your phone. You'll wash them off your hands, but then touching your phone again will transfer them back onto your hands.

Research suggests that a source of many contagions is your desk and keyboard at work. Touch screens, such as ATMs and self-serve checkouts are also known for carrying dangerous pathogens.

The number of germs and bacteria found on your phone is made worse by the nature of a mobile phone - it is a device that heats up with use, providing a perfect breeding ground for the pathogens on them.

So how do I wash my phone?

The information from phone manufacturers differs from brand to brand, Apple even has different information for different models. Some suggest only using a microfibre cloth, which leaves all the germs and bacteria behind. Others suggest anti-microbial wipes, but again they're not generally effective against bacteria and mould. Isopropyl alcohol and disinfectant wipes are generally coming out on top, but at what cost?

Studies have shown that people often use wipes incorrectly, or not thoroughly enough to give a proper clean. Reusing a wipe, even across multiple surfaces of the same item can negate their effectiveness. For cleaning a phone, many people wipe the screen to get rid of oil and fingerprints, but they neglect the back, where one hand holds the phone most commonly for use, and can't get into the small spaces, such as around buttons and switches, or into the charging port.

Correctly using antibacterial wipes gets costly over time, and the damage to the environment is also a big issue. Disposing of soiled wipes is causing damage to sewers when flushed down the toilet. The chemicals in wet wipes are also causing problems in landfill when they are binned.

So what's the alternative, that's quick, easy and gentle on the environment? UV Sanitisers.

UV-C light is one of the three wavelengths of UV light. It is the shortest of the three wavelength, which means it has the highest frequency. UV-C light has been used as a cleaning tool in industry, including hospitals for many years. More recently it has been deployed in New York to disinfect subway trains, train stations and buses.

Utraviolet (UV) light destroys the molecular bonds that hold together the DNA of viruses and bacteria. UV light is a particularly good option for disinfection because it kills bacteria regardless of drug resistance and without toxic chemicals.

How does a UV Sanitiser work?

Equipped with multiple UV-C lights, the UVSAN Zoomlite UV Sanitiser and Phone Charger provides 360° sterilisation coverage without using any harmful chemicals.

With 2 sanitisation modes you can choose from a full 5-minutes sterilisation, killing 99.9% of germs and bacteria, or a quick 59-second sterilisation to kill 90% of germs and bacteria when you're in a hurry.

It really is that simple!

Powered by a USB cable that you can plug into a suitable wall plug, powerbank or any powered USB port (hint: like on your computer), this lightweight device is perfect for using at work or at home. You can even take it away on your travels (when that becomes available again!).

The capsule design keeps all of the waves inside, which eliminates the potential for exposure to the user. A UV Phone Sanitiser can be used on any item that fits into the interior without touching the edges. This is because if something touches an edge, it means that light cannot shine onto this spot.

For best results, particularly with funny shaped items, like a bunch of keys, which have surfaces lying on the bottom of the sanitiser, or when sterilising fabric or items that fold (like a wallet), reposition the item and run it for a second cycle. The UV light will sanitise every spot the light can get to, which is great for your phone's joins and charging port, but takes a little repositioning to expose the pleats and corners of a fabric mask for example.

What else can this device do?

The UVSAN Zoomlite UV Sanitiser and Phone Charger can also wirelessly charge your phone! Compatible with all Qi-enabled mobile phones, the UV Sanitiser also has a high-speed wireless charger. Most recent mobile phones are now compatible (iPhone 8 onwards, for Samsung S6 and Note 5 onwards), or you can purchase a separate wireless receiver to enable wireless charging on your older mobile phone. And don't worry, if your phone isn't compatible with high speed charging, the UVSAN will adjust the output to meet the speed your phone requires for charging.

The wireless charger is located on the top of the UVSAN, so you can charge your phone while sanitising your accessories. This also means if your phone is needed while it's charging, you don't need to interrupt the sanitisation cycle to use it.

There's also an aromatherapy function, allowing you to add essential oils to your sanitisation function, perfect for freshening up your fabric masks while they're being sanitised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe for my phone's delicate electronics?

Yes it is completely safe to clean your phone with a UV sanitiser. It utilises UV-C LED technology similar to those used in medical application to prevent infection. It does not use any radiation or toxic chemicals.

Will a UV Sanitiser harm my credit card or bank cards?

UV light is safe to use to clean your credit cards. The oils from your hands are more likely to damage the chip and magnetic strip of your credit card than UV light.

UV rays can cause sunburn & skin cancer - is this safe to use?

This UV sanitiser is designed for use on your phone & accessories. The UV lights only function when the unit is closed & the sanitisation function is switched on, so there is no exposure to your skin. In fact, it has an automatic shutoff feature so that if it is opened while the UV lights are on it will turn itself off to protect you.

Does this clean off fingerprints and smudges too?

No, the UVSAN Zoomlite UV Sanitiser and Phone Charger kills the germs and bacteria breeding on your phone. It won't clean off smudges and fingerprints.

Can I use this to charge my other devices like earphones/watches

This will depend on the device. You should be able to charge any device with Qi-enabled wireless charging capabilities, following their guidelines (eg airpods need to be in the wireless charging case to be able to charge wireslessly). Samsung watches can be charged wirelessly, Apple watches can not.

Can I still use my phone while it is being sanitised?

You'll need to leave your phone alone for the time it takes to sanitise in the UV Phone Sanitiser (59 seconds or 5 minutes depending on the mode). If an urgent call comes through while it's sanitising, opening the UV Sanitiser to retrieve your phone will shut off the sanitiser so that you can take your call. Don't forget to put your phone back in the UV Sanitiser afterwards and run the cycle again as it may not have finished cleaning.
